Four electronics stores were engulfed by flames in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Ikotun, Lagos State, leading to the complete loss of all merchandise within the affected shops.
The fire broke out in a commercial building adjacent to the GUO Transport Company terminal in Ikotun.
Among the items lost in the fire were household appliances, including television sets, washing machines, and power generators.
A local resident informed our correspondent that neighbors quickly organized to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building before emergency services arrived.
According to him, residents made desperate attempts using water to control the flames until the Lagos State Fire Service arrived on the scene.
He praised the firefighters for their rapid response, highlighting that their timely intervention averted what could have been a much larger disaster.
“Had it not been for their prompt action, the entire building might have been consumed by the fire, potentially affecting nearby structures,” he stated.
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be officially determined, although the resident speculated that an electrical fault might have sparked the incident.
It was reported that authorities cordoned off the affected area, and fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
This incident contributes to a series of recent fire outbreaks in Lagos, including those at the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Arena Market in Oshodi over the past eight days.
