Kebbi govt proposes death penalty for bandit informants, launches new security measures

Published on June 25, 2025 at 03:56 PM

Amid escalating violence in parts of Kebbi State, Governor Nasiru Idris has announced a proposal to amend state laws by introducing death penalty or life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of aiding bandits as informants.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during a condolence visit to Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, where recent attacks by armed groups claimed at least 30 lives and led to widespread cattle rustling.

Describing informants as “deadly elements within our communities,”; Governor Idris warned that his administration would take a hardline stance against those who provide intelligence to criminal groups.

“We will not fold our arms while these individuals continue to facilitate terror and destruction,”; he stated.

To bolster security in the troubled Zuru Emirate, the governor revealed that plans are underway to establish a permanent military operational base in the area. He added that Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other security equipment have already been secured from Abuja to enhance local response capabilities.

“As a government, we are committed to protecting lives and property. We are here not only to sympathize with the victims but to assure them that concrete steps are being taken to secure our communities,”; Governor Idris said during the visit.

He also disclosed recent security investments by his administration, including the procurement of 80 Hilux vehicles, 1,500 motorcycles for local vigilantes, and improved welfare packages for security personnel stationed in volatile areas.

Traditional leaders in the region, including the chief of Danko, Alhaji Ibrahim Al’aji and chief of Dabai, Alhaji Suleiman Sami, respectively, appreciated the governor and called for better border security to restrict the movement of bandits into the state.
