Kano govt vows tough action against sponsors of thuggery, phone snatching

Published on June 19, 2025 at 06:22 PM

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, says he will deal decisively with individuals allegedly sponsoring youth to engage in thuggery and phone snatching in Kano State, stating that his government will not allow this criminality to persist.

The governor said this Wednesday evening while speaking to journalists and supporters at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, after returning from the Holy pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Governor Yusuf said he was concerned at how young people were being used as criminal elements. He said while some may have been misled, some people are deliberately instigating the issue from behind the scenes.

“We have no other State better than Kano”;, he said.

“This is a direct address to our youth, we won’t deny that some of you are misled to commit these acts, but there are people that instigated to sponsor you to commit these disgraceful acts, and we will take scientific measures against the sponsors of those acts in Kano”;.

Although he did not mention any names, Governor Yusuf warned that those backing such crimes will be identified and dealt with.
He also announced plans by the state government to launch various youth-focused initiatives aimed at rehabilitation, empowerment, and job creation. These, he said, will help steer young people away from crime and towards a more productive and responsible lifestyle.

“Our government is committed to introducing programmes that will support youth development and discourage involvement in violence or phone theft,”; he said.

The governor further called on parents, traditional leaders, and community members to support the government’s efforts by mentoring and guiding the youth, emphasizing that the fight against crime must be a collective responsibility.
