A civil society group in Kano has urged the Supreme Court to hasten its ruling on the ongoing emirship legal dispute, warning that delays are fueling political tension and public anxiety across the state.
The appeal was made on Thursday by the Coalition of Political Analysts and Democracy Protectors during a press conference in Kano.
Speaking at the event, the group’s convener, Al-Amin Albarra, said the legal stalemate surrounding the emirship tussle poses a threat to peace and stability if not resolved promptly.
“The prolonged uncertainty is increasing tension and could lead to public disorder,”; Albarra warned.
The case before the Supreme Court involves Aminu Babba DanAgundi, a senior member of the Kano Emirate, who is challenging the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. DanAgundi seeks to overturn a lower court ruling that affirmed Sanusi’s return and displaced the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The coalition expressed concern that the dispute has created deep divisions among residents and could further escalate if left unresolved.
“This is not just about traditional leadership, it raises important constitutional questions. A clear ruling from the Supreme Court would help guide future cases and prevent political interference in traditional institutions,”; Albarra added.
