played with a brace under his shirt and even starred for the Three Lions at two major tournaments while managing the problem.
The midfielder explained he first dislocated his left shoulder while playing for Borussia Dortmund at the start of the 2022-23 season but did not want surgery to rule him out of the that winter.
But subsequent dislocations in both 2023 and 2024 while playing for Real Madrid forced his hand and he eventually had the , a week after Los Blancos were knocked out of the Club World Cup.
Bellingham shared a seven-minute video on his YouTube channel on Wednesday in which he gave unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to a top-level footballer having surgery.
The video footage included Bellingham talking it through with surgeon Andy Wallace before the cameras document the actual surgery, including Wallace inserting an instrument into the shoulder and a screen showing the inside of the shoulder.
Bellingham – who – narrated the YouTube video , with the ex-Birmingham City man interviewed just three days after the successful operation with his left shoulder and arm in a sling.
He said: “I was really worried about everything that could go wrong, really. It’s the most anxious I’ve been about anything, the hardest feeling I’ve had before something.
“It’s the instability of knowing that if I land funny, it can always come out.
“The thing I’m most looking forward to is being able to play without a brace again.
“I just couldn’t risk the timeline with the 2022 World Cup. We pushed off and pushed off and held off.
“I think the actual shoulder injury itself has a lot of effect on the rest of my body.
“Wearing the brace means that other parts of my body have to compensate for the lack of use that my shoulder can do.
“I had a point where I felt like I couldn’t move because of a pain I had in my back so I got a scan and there was a herniated disc on the side of my shoulder.
“I know what I can do technically, tactically, all that stuff I’ve proven before.
“But now being back to my best physically will aid all that into coming into one and seeing the best of me, hopefully.”
Bellingham put off the operation to star at the Qatar 2022, where he became youngster World Cup goalscorer.
But an awkward fall against Rayo Vallecano in November 2023, five months after his £115million switch from Dortmund, retriggered the dislocation.
Bellingham battled on, though, and did not want to disrupt his maiden season at the Bernabeu, which – before a run to the Euro 2024 final.
He admitted in hindsight he should have had the surgery after the Euros but delayed it again – only for the weakened shoulder to pop out again at the start of the 2024-25 for the third season running.
Bellingham – who made his Real comeback on September 20, just nine weeks after the op last summer – added: “The one against Rayo Vallecano felt worse than the normal ones. Probably the most painful thing I’ve been through at the time.
“It stayed out for a while and I couldn’t get it back in myself, which I’d been able to do before the previous times.
“It felt like an eternity before the physios got it back in.
“It was actually 90 seconds that it took for them to actually be able to come on the pitch and pop it back in.
“But for me, it was like, it felt like five, ten minutes. It was a horrible experience.
“Everyone points to surgery straight away but it was my first year at the club and I didn’t want to have to disrupt the year that the team was having, that I was having, to miss three months.
“In hindsight, I think the best time to do it would have been after the Euros.
“Obviously, the season ended perfectly with and then not quite as well with England and I didn’t want that to be the last taste I had in my mouth for three months.”
