On his way to seven Grand Slam titles, he was famous for haranguing umpires – with his “you cannot be serious!” remark in 1981 famous worldwide.
And on this occasion it was BBC’s Nick Mullins who caught the seven-time Grand Slam winner’s ire.
McEnroe was asked: “Do you think this is it [for Williams’ career]? She’ll be 45 if she’s here again next year.”
But the three-time Wimbledon winner abruptly replied: “You think I know? Don’t ask me a question that’s unanswerable.”
The question was then posted to Tracy Austin, who dodged it in politer fashion.
She simply replied: “”I think we have got to celebrate Maya Joint [Williams’ opponent] now and celebrate Serena coming back.”
Aussie Joint, 20, raced into the lead in the match as she prevailed 6-3 in the first set.
But Williams, 44, did what she has done so many times in her career and turned the tide with an epic 8-6 win in the second-set tie-break.
Ultimately, however, the 24-year age gap proved too difficult for Williams to overcome as she went down 6-3 in the third set.
did not attend the post-match press conference due to a knee injury and her eagerly-anticipated Doubles reunion with older sister Venus on Friday is now in doubt.
