JAMES MADDISON slammed Prem referees after being denied a late penalty against Leeds.

The midfielder was making his long-awaited as Spurs look to push themselves clear of in the relegation race.

Maddison, 29, burst into the Leeds box in the dying minutes of the match, before going down under a challenge from Lukas Nmecha.

The former international was adamant the challenge would have warranted a penalty.

But after a check, in which referee Jarred Gillett was not sent to the monitor, it was deemed there was not an offence, after the ball was seen to change direction after an apparent touch from Nmecha.

A fuming Maddison took to after the match to claim it was actually his foot that moved the ball, and accused referees of being scared to make decisions.

He uploaded a story that said: “For clarity… the small tiny touch on the ball to change direction came from the outside of my right foot, not Nmecha, and I told the ref that but the check was over in about 20 seconds.

“Officials are petrified to make decisions on the pitch now because of VAR.

“We keep fighting. COYS.”

The decision meant that and co had to settle for a draw, extending their lead over relegation rivals West Ham to two points.

With two games of the season left, and a goal difference lead of 11, Spurs will most likely need four points to confirm their spot in the league regardless of how the Hammers fare.

His introduction off the bench in the Leeds draw , and marked an emotional return for one of the club’s biggest stars last season.

He said after the match: “That was an amazing moment that will live with me forever, the reception I got today.

“It’s been some dark days in the last year, especially since the surgery. It’s been a really tough year for me mentally.

“But I’m at the end of the tunnel now so I can kind of look back on that with fondness because I’m as mentally strong as I can be after going through it.”
