The Yauri Local Government Council in Kebbi State has implemented a nighttime curfew in Yauri town due to a violent confrontation associated with illegal gold mining activities.

The curfew, which is in effect from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., was announced on Wednesday to restore peace and prevent further disturbances.

The violence reportedly erupted on Tuesday night when security personnel intervened to halt the lynching of a suspect accused of murdering a gold miner. This intervention allegedly incited miners, who then retaliated with attacks.

According to eyewitnesses, the miners went on a rampage shortly after the suspect was rescued, setting fire to tyres and obstructing the Yauri–Zuru highway, which disrupted traffic. Security forces later dispersed the demonstrators.

An unnamed source informed reporters that two commercial motorcycle riders were discovered dead on Tuesday, with their deaths suspected to be connected to the ongoing illegal mining activities.

The source further noted that miners resumed their operations just two days after a government directive ordered a cessation of mining in the region.

The council stated that the curfew was essential to safeguard lives and property, allowing security agencies to effectively manage the situation.

Violent confrontations related to illegal mining have been reported throughout northern Nigeria. In September 2025, the Yauri council enacted a similar curfew following a clash involving youths in the Garin Katta community.

It is important to note that on December 1, the Northern Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council called for a six-month suspension of mining activities across the region, citing illegal mining as a significant factor contributing to increased insecurity.

They urged the Federal Government to suspend mining exploration and conduct an audit and revalidation of mining licenses in collaboration with state governments.
