Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, the former Niger State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism and a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, has called on the federal government to promptly establish a military base and deploy marine police in Agwara Local Government Area to address terrorist attacks.

This appeal follows the recent tragic incident at Kasunwa Deji Market in Borgu, where 42 individuals lost their lives.

Vatsa, speaking in Minna, highlighted that Agwara’s strategic position along the River Niger makes it a crucial security zone, as terrorists are utilizing the waterway to evade capture and move freely.

In a statement issued on Tuesday titled “Urgent Call for the Establishment of Naval Base and Deployment of Marine Police in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State,” the APC leader pointed out that a military base would secure the river corridor, restrict terrorists' access, and enhance rapid response capabilities.

“In light of the ongoing incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks, particularly the heartbreaking event at St. Mary Catholic Missionary School in Papiri, it is essential for the federal government to establish a Nigerian military base in Agwara and deploy marine police units to the area to ensure the safety of the residents,” he stated.

“Moreover, intelligence and security reports consistently indicate that criminal groups and bandits are using the River Niger as an escape and transit route, moving freely after attacking communities, schools, and travelers,” he noted.

The former commissioner also cautioned that insecurity along the River Niger not only jeopardizes lives but also undermines agriculture, interstate commerce, education, and national unity.

“The ongoing security challenges faced by Niger and neighboring states necessitate immediate, decisive, and strategic intervention by the federal government,” he emphasized.

“The current security crisis is beyond the capacity of the state government to handle alone,” the APC leader asserted.

Vatsa further remarked that securing the riverine community would restore confidence, attract investments, and reaffirm the government's commitment to safeguarding its citizens.
