SIR Keir Starmer could U-turn on the winter fuel cut within weeks, The Sun on Sunday can reveal.
The PM is considering junking the controversial benefit cut after a mutiny by Labour MPs and voters at the .
No10 is looking at two possible options – raising the threshold at which pensioners lose the benefit from £11,500 so more keep it, or scrapping the cut altogether.
Some 10 million pensioners lost their fuel allowance in the benefit cut.
It saved the Treasury just £1.4 billion but caused a massive public outcry.
Senior Whitehall sources said the decision to slash winter fuel payments for all but the poorest pensioners has bombed on the doorstep.
It is being looked at again and a decision could come “quickly”;; they added.
Another source said: “They are discussing softening it, or getting rid of it.”;;
Spooked by plummeting poll ratings, Labour MPs are in a mutinous mood with No10.
One party source said: “It has been our worst two weeks in government so far. It is pretty grim. There are a lot of emotions.”;;
Sir Keir will face the fury of his backbenchers when he takes questions at a meeting of Labour MPs in on Monday night.
He is braced for a kicking from his MPs, who have complained the PM does not bother to get to know them or listen to their concerns.
Sir Keir is not expected to announce a winter fuel U-turn at the meeting.
But his appearance is an admission by No10 that he needs to give his MPs more face time and listen to their concerns.
Meanwhile, is understood to be working on other plans to give Labour MPs more red meat.
One insider said: “Labour MPs are complaining that so far it has been too much about spreadsheets and not enough about Labour values.”;;
