A NEW review into elderly care is “doomed to failure”; unless the cost of inaction is laid bare, an MPs’ report says.
The high cost of looking after elderly relatives, low pay for workers and reliance on unpaid are key issues.
The warning comes just days after the formal launch of a commission into adult social care by Baroness Louise Casey that will report in two stages by 2028.
A report by the select committee says £32billion was spent in the 12 months to March 2024 with “unsustainable pressure”; on cash-strapped .
They warned of the “unknowable, and potentially life-changing”; charges for care people face.
They include one in seven older people with costs exceeding £100,000.
The report said that the government “does not have a robust understanding of the extent of the current system’s failings”;.
They added: “Without this, it will be unable to make a clear case for reform.”;
Fears are mounting over the implementation of the recommendations taking place in a phased way over a decade.
