Months after promises, Nemnai Bridge in Taraba remain unrepaired

Published on May 01, 2025 at 06:26 AM

Several weeks after authorities at both state and federal levels pledged to repair the collapsed Nemnai Bridge in Gassol local government council of Taraba State, no visible action has been taken.

The bridge, a major link between Taraba, Benue State, and the southern region of Nigeria, have remained impassable, leaving travelers stranded and the local economy further strained.

The situation has deteriorated with the onset of the rainy season.

Flooding and increased road erosion have made alternative routes barely accessible, worsening the hardship faced by motorists and residents.

In an earlier visit to the site, the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari, had described the situation as critical and announced that the Federal Government would begin full-scale repairs on the bridge within weeks.

However, months later, no contractor has been assigned, and no repair work has commenced.

The Nemnai Bridge, as earlier reported by DAILY POST, collapsed during last year’s rainy season and has since disrupted movement and commerce, cutting Taraba off from critical connections to North Central and southern Nigeria.

Local motorists and residents who spoke to our reporter expressed frustration at the failure of both the Taraba State government and the federal government to fulfill their promises.

They warned that the prolonged inaction could worsen the state’s economic challenges and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene immediately by directing the appropriate agencies to begin reconstruction efforts without further delay.

“The government must act now,”; one resident said.

“We can’t continue to suffer like this while promises remain unfulfilled,”; he added.
