May Day: Restore Fubara, others without delay – NLC to Tinubu

Published on May 02, 2025 at 12:27 PM

The Organized Labour in Rivers State has called on President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the democratically elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and members of the State House of Assembly without further delay.

Speaking during an address to members of the organized labour on Workers’ Day, at the State Secretariat on Thursday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Rivers State chapter, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, also urged the Sole Administrator of the state, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, to facilitate a peaceful reconciliation process.

Agwanwor emphasized the need for an expedited return of elected officials, in line with democratic norms observed across other states of the federation.

He further encouraged workers across the state to remain dedicated, law-abiding, and diligent in the discharge of their duties.

The NLC Chairman cautioned against any actions that could lead to provocation or instability.

Agwanwor said, “Finally, as we reflect on the happenings in Rivers State in the past one month, the suspension of all democratically elected government and institutions, we must remain steadfast, law-abiding, and avoid acts that could provoke unrest.”;

“The organized labour fought for democracy, we are a product of democracy, and we will continue to fight until democracy is fully restored in our land.”;

In line with the national directive of the NLC, this year’s Workers’ Day celebration held under the theme “Reclaiming the Civil Space Amid Economic Hardship”;, was confined to the NLC State Secretariat in Port Harcourt.

The decision was a show of solidarity with the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the State Assembly.

DAILY POST reports that the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Worika, and the Acting Head of Service were among dignitaries present at the event.
