Published on May 09, 2025 at 03:04 PM

The crisis in Labour Party, LP, has a new twist with the suspension of embattled factional National Chairman, Julius Abure.

Abure was suspended by LP National Executive Council, NEC, for illegally parading himself as National Chairman despite being removed by the court.

His suspension was announced by the chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Nenadi Usman, in a statement on Friday.

Nenadi said Abure’s continued violation of court orders impugns on the integrity of the Labour Party.

She asked Abure to stop parading himself as the party’s chairman, noting that his tenure has long expired.

The statement said: “After a careful and comprehensive review of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025, the National Executive Council is deeply concerned by the subsequent actions of Barr. Julius Abure, particularly his continued impersonation of the esteemed office of the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

“In the exercise of its constitutional mandate and in strict accordance with the disciplinary provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (As Amended), the NEC, in session, hereby announces the immediate suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from the Labour Party, effective today, the 7th day of May, 2025, in the first instance.

“Mr. Abure is hereby warned to desist from parading himself as the National Chairman of the Labour Party or impersonating the office in any form.

“He should also present himself to anyone as a member of the Labour Party. The apex court of the land has clearly and finally nullified his claim to leadership, and his tenure has long expired by the passage of time.”;

This comes after the Abure-led faction suspended Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Senator Ireti Kingibe and four others indefinitely from the party.

Their suspension was made public by Umar Farouk Ibrahim, LP National Secretary, on Wednesday.
