Kano gov’t bans ‘Kauyawa Day’ celebrations across state

Published on May 17, 2025 at 03:34 PM

The Kano State Censorship Board has announced a statewide ban on the celebration of “Kauyawa Day,”;; a tradition commonly practiced by women during wedding ceremonies.

To enforce the ban and align with the government’s broader goals of preserving public morality and order, the board unveiled a set of enforcement measures.

In a statement issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, it was disclosed that its Chairman, Abba El-Mustapha, outlined the steps during a press briefing. He emphasized that the ban is aimed at protecting societal values and promoting peace across the state.

As part of the new measures, event venues and party halls are prohibited from hosting any activities linked to “Kauyawa Day”;; until existing regulations are reviewed and updated. The Board will work closely with security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the law.

Local vigilante groups and the Hisbah Board will also be mobilized to support compliance efforts. In addition, the Board plans to engage community elders and youth groups to raise awareness and encourage public support for the policy.

Religious leaders, including imams and Islamic scholars, will be enlisted to educate parents and community members on the reasons behind the ban. Traditional rulers—such as district heads, ward leaders, and village chiefs—will also play a role in reinforcing the directive at the grassroots level.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing the entertainment space in Kano State and vowed to take firm action against practices that undermine public morality or threaten societal peace.
