Justice must be served for slain islamic scholar – Amnesty International tells govt

Published on May 04, 2025 at 10:40 AM

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible for the gruesome killing of Islamic scholar Sheikh Mustapha Aliyu of Unguwar Mai Kawo village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State are brought to justice.

The cleric, who had been abducted by armed bandits, was reportedly slaughtered after spending nearly two weeks in captivity.

In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Amnesty International condemned the continued wave of insecurity across the state and the lack of accountability for the perpetrators.

“The Nigerian authorities must ensure that the suspected killers of Islamic scholar, Sheikh Mustapha Aliyu, face justice,”; the group said.

“He was slaughtered after about two weeks in the custody of bandits.”;

The rights group further decried the escalating violence in Katsina State and other parts of northern Nigeria, where gunmen and armed groups continue to commit atrocities with impunity.

“Gunmen and other armed groups continue to carry out daily atrocities across Katsina State, razing villages, raping women and girls with utter impunity,”; the statement read.

“Apart from killings, the bandits also establish full control of villages by operating ruthless rules and collecting levies.”;

Amnesty International expressed concern over the Nigerian government’s inability to curb the attacks, warning that the failure to prosecute those responsible undermines the right to life and fuels further violence.
