Europa League semi-final: Man Utd, Tottenham win first-leg matches

Published on May 01, 2025 at 09:20 PM

There is a strong possibility of an all-English final in the Europa League, after Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both recorded convincing victories in the first legs of their semi-final ties.

In Spain, United thrashed 10-man Athletic Bilbao 3–0.

Rúben Amorim’s men were already a goal up through a Casemiro penalty when the referee awarded another spot-kick following a VAR review.

Dani Vivian was adjudged to have denied Rasmus Højlund a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty—his first of two goals on the night—before later lifting the ball deftly over the Athletic goalkeeper.

In the other semi-final, Tottenham defeated Bodø/Glimt 3–1 in North London.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring for Ange Postecoglou’s side before James Maddison and Dominic Solanke added to the tally.

The Norwegian side managed a consolation goal in the 83rd minute through Ulrik Saltnes.
