Environmental hazard: Nekede community decries govt inactiveness over refuse evacuation

Published on May 18, 2025 at 05:33 AM

Residents of Umuerim Nekede community and students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State,
have decried the government’s negligence on evacuation of heap of refuse along Nekede-Ihiagwa road.

They appealed to the State Government to help evacuate the mounting refuse in order to save the community from likely outbreak of deadly diseases.

The huge refuse dump has been mounting along Nekede-Ihiagwa Road between the polytechnic gate and the secondary school, constituting environmental hazards.

A student of Mass Communication, who gave his name as John lucky, said that the site is not only an eyesore, but equally constitutes serious environmental and health hazard to the people around the area, including students.

He hinted that if the refuse dump continued to linger, it may spark protest from the students who make up a chunk of the population of the area.

Residents have also expressed shock at what they described as inaction on the part of the authorities of Owerri West Local Government Area.

Some residents of the area, who craved anonymity hinted that the refuse had kept mounting for some time now, raising questions as to why the Owerri West LGA Chairman has not taken action up till the moment.

They made a passionate appeal to Governor Hope Uzodinma to come to their rescue as the situation had become a threat to their health, worsened by the advent of the rainy season.
