‘Communist persecution’ – Trump blows hot, asks DOJ to free ‘hostage’ Tina Peters

Published on May 06, 2025 at 01:05 PM

United States President Donald Trump has escalated his defense of former Mesa County, Colorado clerk, Tina Peters, who was convicted in 2024 for a scheme to undermine the 2020 election.

Trump labelled Peters a “political prisoner”; and directed the Department of Justice, DOJ, to take all necessary action to ensure her immediate release.

In a post to his Truth Social on Monday night, Trump also criticized Democratic Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, insisting that Peters’ conviction was a communist persecution by the radical left Democrats to cover up their election crimes in 2020.

“Tina is an innocent Political Prisoner being horribly and unjustly punished in the form of Cruel and Unusual Punishment,”; Trump wrote.

“This is a Communist persecution by the Radical Left Democrats to cover up their Election crimes and misdeeds in 2020.

“Colorado must end this unjust incarceration of an innocent American.

“I am hereby directing the Department of Justice to take all necessary action to help secure the release of this ‘hostage’ being held in a Colorado prison by the Democrats, for political reasons. FREE TINA PETERS, NOW!”;

Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison last August on seven criminal charges related to a security breach that occurred in the spring of 2021 in her own office.

Prosecutors said Peters granted unauthorized access to voting equipment to prove untrue claims of election fraud.
