However, she urges anyone who wants to protect their eyes and lashes to give waterproof mascara a wide berth.

According to Dr Elizabeth, “it’s very difficult to take off and, as a result, it often causes broken “.

“For special occasions it’s fine, but not for every day,”; she added.

Waterproof mascara is designed to stay in place through water, sweat and , making it harder to remove.

The process of removing it usually requires a strong or oil-based products, and lots of scrubbing.

But the friction and rubbing required to truly clean your lashes of waterproof mascara can weaken or damage your lashes over time.

Due to the stubbornness of the formula, could even pull out full clumps of lashes in the process.

What’s more, waterproof formulas tend to be more drying than regular mascaras, as they often contain different ingredients to make them resistant to water.

This can make your eyelashes brittle and prone to breakage or splitting, especially if you wear it daily.

Fear not if this throws all your mascara preferences out of the window, as Dr Elizabeth recommended a £9.59 buy to use instead.

She loves the L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Mascara, which is usually priced at £12 on the online beauty retailer, because it delivers dramatic length and definition without flaking or causing sensitivity.

And not to mention, it’s more affordable than lots of other mascaras on the market.

A blurb on it reads: “In a flash of a stroke...up to 60% longer looking lashes and intensity lash by lash.

“The high-precision flexible multi-comb is made of supple elastomer bristles that help give a precise application.

“The flat surfaces of the multi-comb stretch the formula from the roots of your lashes right through to the tips.

“Comb the brush through lashes by moving back and forth from root to tip. Layer multiple coats for even more volume.”;
