The Nigerian Army has stated that the ongoing detention of two separatist leaders, Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa, has contributed to a measure of peace in the Southeast region of the country.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, conveyed this information in a recent statement.
Onoja noted that there has been a decrease in criminal activities throughout the region in recent times.
“Crimes and other unlawful activities have significantly reduced this year, following intensified operations by troops across the Southeastern states, along with recent court decisions against their leader, Simon Ekpa, who was imprisoned by the Government of Finland, and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Onoja remarked.
He indicated that these developments have considerably weakened the group’s operational capabilities.
The Defense spokesman elaborated that the extremists had previously depended on assaults on lightly guarded checkpoints and security posts.
He further explained that such attacks often resulted in the deaths of security personnel, with weapons being seized and subsequently utilized for further terror activities in the region.
The Army has asserted that ongoing operations will continue to build on recent successes, safeguard lives and property, and thwart the re-emergence of criminal elements in the Southeast.
