Imo State Government, through the ministry of education has introduced new educational policies, banning the yearly method of introducing new textbooks for pupils in both public and private schools in the State.
It also put to an end, the practice of organizing graduation ceremonies for nursery and JSS 3 students.
The new policies were made known through the office of the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Education, Bernard Ikegwuoha in a press statement.
The Commissioner stated that the new policy was aimed at reducing financial strain on parents and prioritizing academic focus.
The policy also restricts private and faith-based schools from changing textbooks annually, mandating their use for at least four years.
According to the Education Commissioner, the policy only permits graduation ceremonies for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School 3 students, which he stated aligned with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
Ikegwuoha asserted that the Ministry was committed to providing quality and functional education, ensuring that unnecessary financial spending was discouraged.
The Commissioner added that the four-year cycle for approved textbooks will allow siblings to share books across academic sessions, encourage saving cost and a stable learning environment.
“Proprietors must adhere to the approved textbook list to reduce costs and maintain consistency.
“These measures reflect the State Government’s commitment to creating a financially sustainable and academically focused education system.
“By eliminating excessive ceremonies and curbing textbook turnover, the Government aims to support parents while fostering a conducive environment for student success,” he stated.
