The Imo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to implement free and compulsory education in the state's public schools, encompassing both primary and secondary levels, to promote enrollment.
This resolution was reached after the adoption of a motion proposed by Chisom Ojukwu, the representative for Nkwere Constituency, during the plenary session on Tuesday.
In presenting the motion, Ojukwu emphasized that education is essential for social advancement, economic development, and responsible citizenship, and should be made affordable and accessible to every child.
He referenced Section 18 of the amended 1999 Constitution, which mandates that the government provide free and compulsory education at the primary and secondary levels and ensure that higher education is accessible to all Nigerian citizens.
The lawmaker also suggested that digital literacy should be mandatory, and proposed the establishment of a help desk for the federal government's student loan scheme in the 27 local government areas of the state to facilitate access for rural residents.
“The new Federal Government Student Loan Scheme is a commendable initiative that will assist students in funding their education, but it requires local support and awareness to function effectively in the state,” he stated.
Ojukwu acknowledged the efforts made by the Governor to enhance the quality of education in the state, particularly the prohibition of illegal fees in schools, the recruitment and retraining of teachers, and the renovation of schools. Nevertheless, he noted that many families, especially those with lower incomes, still struggle to send their children to school, highlighting the necessity for a free education policy.
The Nkwere lawmaker advised the state government to create an Education Trust Fund and develop a ten-year plan to ensure sustained funding for schools, improve learning conditions, and secure a brighter future for the children of Imo.
Regarding digital literacy, Ojukwu asserted that providing internet access and other digital resources in public schools will enable students to effectively compete with their peers.
He observed that as the world becomes increasingly digital, it is vital to equip young individuals with modern learning tools to help them succeed in any environment.
After thorough deliberation, the House adopted the motion and instructed the clerk to communicate their resolution to the Governor.
