EVEN more flights have been cancelled to and from a popular European holiday destination – which has seen hundreds of people stuck abroad.
Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, has been erupting for 10 days, which has resulted in the closure of Catania Airport.

And the closure of the airport has continued into today, resulting in more flight cancellations.
This includes:
- 11:10am flight to with Ryanair
- 12pm flight from Manchester with Jet2
- 12:50pm flight to Manchester with Jet2
As a result, hundreds of passengers have been left stranded in
One man flying back to Ireland commented: “Aer Lingus you’re an absolute disgrace, left a full flight sitting in an airport all day with no information [and] brought us all to a closed airport, what a joke.”
On Reddit, another user said: “EasyJet flight from ended up being diverted to Rome FCO.
“Passengers are still stuck there waiting to board a flight today to hopefully go on to Catania.”
Other travellers have mentioned waiting in the airport for hotel allocation while others travelled elsewhere including getting a ferry to to fly back to the UK.
In an updated statement on the airport’s website, it states: “Due to the volcanic activity, all incoming flights remain suspended, and all departures are currently suspended until 2:00pm local time.
“Passengers are asked not to proceed to the airport until they have checked the status of their flight with their airline.

Despite the active volcanic activity, according to the Italian Government’s Civil Protection Department “currently, the alert level for Etna is yellow” on a scale from green-yellow-orange-red.
Flights from Sicily’s other major airport, are currently unaffected.
Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano, sitting at 3,300 metres on Sicily’s eastern coast and Catania is the closest airport.
