Morris was diagnosed with the illness in January 2022 but managed to return to work later that year.

He ultimately stepped down as the chief executive of Glamorgan in September 2023.

During his treatment, he spent more time with his family.

Glamorgan announced his passing on social media with a heartfelt statement.

The statement read: “Glamorgan County Cricket Club is profoundly saddened to hear of the passing of Glamorgan legend, trophy-winning captain, and former CEO Hugh Morris MBE.

“Our thoughts are with Hugh’s family, friends, and colleagues during this very challenging time.”

Career Highlights

Morris is celebrated as a legend at Glamorgan, having won a Championship medal and various trophies in one-day cricket for the club.

He played 588 matches for the club across both one-day and first-class formats.

He captained the club and represented England’s Test team three times in 1991.

Additionally, he led England A on tours to South Africa, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka.

Tributes

Dan Cherry, the current chief executive of Glamorgan, paid tribute to the club legend.

He stated: “Everyone at Glamorgan County Cricket Club, as well as beyond, is devastated to hear the heartbreaking news about Hugh.

“The last few years have been incredibly challenging for him and his family, but we were grateful to see Hugh several times during the 2025 season here at Sophia Gardens.

“I know that the fact that our Men’s team achieved promotion to the First Division of the Rothesay County Championship and our Women’s team reached the final of their 50-overs competition brought joy to Hugh during his difficult treatment.”

“Hugh holds a very special place in the history of Glamorgan Cricket and in the hearts of the club’s supporters for his contributions, both on and off the field.

“He was a man of great energy and a true gentleman. His achievements will be remembered in the club’s record books, and I doubt any batter in any county team will ever surpass Hugh’s seasonal record of 2,276 first-class runs.”

“As both a player and administrator, Hugh led from the front and bravely faced whatever challenges came his way from opposing bowlers.

“He inspired us with his actions, whether wielding a bat or leading us in the field, and played a crucial role in saving the financially troubled club when foreclosure seemed imminent, all while bravely undergoing extensive and challenging treatment.”

“Hugh leaves behind an incredible legacy, including an international-caliber Stadium at Sophia Gardens—a far cry from the venue when he first played for Glamorgan as a teenager—and a Welsh Fire franchise poised for even greater success in the cricketing landscape of the 2020s and beyond.”

“The club, Welsh cricket, and the sport as a whole have lost a remarkable player, a dedicated administrator, and a wonderful person of great dignity and integrity.”

“Our thoughts and prayers during this tragic time are with his wife, Debbie, their twin daughters, Bethan and Emily, and Hugh’s many friends from across the world of sports and former colleagues throughout the cricketing community.”
