TEMPLEGATE’S Saturday tips are below.
Back a horse by clicking their odds.
LANESBOROUGH (3.20 Newbury, nap)
He struggled to land a blow when it mattered in the Lanzarote last time but back on softer ground he looks a big player. He’s a smooth traveller and this track, as well as the drop in trip, will suit him perfectly.
GRANDEUR D’AME (2.25 Warwick, nb)
has his first go with the old boys and girls today and has a massive shout on recent form. He has dropped to a very attractive mark and wasn’t beaten miles in a decent handicap at Cheltenham last time. This looks a weaker race and gets weight from his main market rivals in this. Alan King’s horses are running well.
ITSEEMSLIKEIT (3.55 Newbury, treble)
Arrives in red-hot form having won easily the last twice on bottomless ground. Conditions are ideal again and he still looks nicely treated off his revised mark.

JUBILEE ALPHA looks a diamond. She has the best form in the book by a way in this field even though she’s yet to win this season. She stays strongly and that’s important in what is likely to be a test over this trip on the ground. She is well in at the weights and Paul Nicholls has his team in great order.
Hollygrove Cha Cha goes back over hurdles after a poor run at Windsor last time. She will love the ground but has a bit to prove after an up and down start to her season. La Pinsonniere was beaten by Jubilee Alpha on her last start back in April and hasn’t been since. The market might be the best guide.
1.50
STEEL ALLY is the one in the Kingmaker. He was mightily impressive at Ascot last time when running away with the Noel Novices’ Chase. He is one of the best jumping novices around and will be hard to stop with a repeat performance. The drop in trip is not a worry given the likely conditions and he is a hardy sort having plied his trade over hurdles for a while before this season. Sam Thomas is a great target trainer and has picked Steel Ally’s next run carefully. He could yet be a big player in the Arkle.
Mambonumberfive has reached new heights over fences and remains on an upwards curve. He will improve again once he goes up in trip but it is credit to the horse he has done so well over this minimum trip. His jumping has been very good and I can’t see the ground being a worry.
2.25
I’VE got some Grand plans in this veterans’ chase. GRANDEUR D’AME has his first go with the old boys and girls today and has a massive shout on recent form. He has dropped to a very attractive mark and wasn’t beaten miles in a decent handicap at Cheltenham last time. This looks a weaker race and gets weight from his main market rivals in this. Alan King’s horses are running well.
Le Milos ran a cracker behind a smart winner at Sandown in a similar race last time. He’s often best on better ground though and that has to be the worry here. Though he did win this race last season and is only a pound higher today.
Knappers Hill ran creditably at Wetherby last time but didn’t look the most willing at the finish. He’s got a bit to prove now in my book especially from top weight.
NEWBURY

SOBER GLORY sets a high standard for all he fluffed his lines two back at Sandown on really soft ground. Conditions are a slight worry but he has an obvious chance having stuffed Kadastral at Chepstow when they met in November. Kadastral has since won cosily over track and trip and should get closer today. Kocktail Bleu looks a live each-way contender with his form stacking up well.
1.35
A PAI DE NOM has been found a good opening after his creditable third in the Lanzarote at Kempton. He’s had a busy season but does not look like he’s reached his ceiling yet. His stamina is the slight doubt on testing ground back up in trip. But if he stays he should have too much up his sleeve for his more exposed rivals here.
Below The Radar is fairly consistent but doesn’t win often and the fact that Freddie Keighley keeps the ride over Harry Cobden suggests Paul Nicholls thinks the handicapper might have his measure.
Crebilly is on a very dangerous mark and is worth a market check. Tranquil Sea hasn’t backed up his promising run at Market Rasen yet but looks a worthy each-way contender.
2.10
HAITI COULEURS is hard to oppose. He showed his battling abilities to win the Welsh National last time and the drop in trip on testing ground is no worry as he has a touch of class as well. The long straight at Newbury will suit him well.
L’Homme Presse ran a blinder in the Cotswold Chase last time but that was only a couple of weeks ago and he is usually better with a longer break between runs. Venetia Williams is also very quiet.
Leave Of Absence will pick up the pieces if either of the big guns fail to fire. He ran well at Ascot again last time. Riskintheground will be happier in a small field but looks booked for fourth unless the others disappoint.
2.45
LULAMBA is hard to take on despite the step into open company. He has bags of ability and has thumped anything brave enough to take him on over fences so far. His jumping is reliable and there isn’t much to take him on with.
There will be plenty of pace on with Saint Segal likely to race prominently. He’d be a threat if allowed an easy time of things but Master Chewy is likely to keep him honest back down at two miles.
Libberty Hunter has ability but often blots his copybook and is hard to trust in a race like this. Calico might be underestimated at the prices if handling the ground.
3.20
LANESBOROUGH gets the nod for the in-form Ben Pauling team. He struggled to land a blow when it mattered in the Lanzarote last time but back on softer ground looks a big player. He’s a smooth traveller and this track, as well as the drop in trip, will suit him perfectly.
Let It Rain could be very well-handicapped but she didn’t find loads at Ascot when asked and the hustle and bustle of this race is not something she’ll be used to.
All In You won cosier than the margin suggested at Sandown last time and a 5lb rise might underestimate him.
Un Sens A La Vie looks a huge danger and might have got my vote but for the doubts about the ground. If he handles testing conditions he will go close.
Tutti Quanti carries top weight but could have more up his sleeve. At big odds don’t rule out Milldam who couldn’t have it soft enough.
