Here’s Every Netflix Record ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Broke With Its Second Season

When you count down the most viral shows on Netflix, there are some obvious standouts. Love is Blind was the network’s first true standout hit in 2020, dominating the Netflix charts in February and March. Outer Banks was the streaming platform’s surprise hit earlier this year, spending 51 consecutive days on the Top 10 charts. And Tiger King took over the Internet this past spring, posting an incredible streak of 27 consecutive days in first place amongst all shows on Netflix.

But since Tiger King, it could be argued that no other show on Netflix has had a more impressive run than the second season of The Umbrella Academy has had over the past month-and-a-half.

And I feel comfortable making that claim because The Umbrella Academy posted some numbers this summer that are simply unmatched. Here’s every great milestone the cult TV show achieved between July and September:

The Longest #1 Streak for Any Scripted Show

As previously mentioned, Tiger King spent more time in first place than anyone else on the Daily Top 10 with an unprecedented 27-day streak. But no scripted show could match The Umbrella Academy’s 15-day streak between July 31 and August 14.

Here are the longest #1 streaks for scripted television shows on Netflix this year:

  1. The Umbrella Academy – 15 days
  2. 13 Reasons Why – 14 days
  3. Dead to Me – 10 days
  4. Away – 10 days
  5. Cobra Kai – 9 days
  6. Space Force – 7 days
  7. Lucifer – 7 days
  8. Five shows tied for 6 days

Turns out? It’s pretty rare for a scripted show to spend ten consecutive days atop the Daily Top 10—let alone 15 days. And even if we included non-scripted shows like Tiger King, Unsolved Mysteries and Floor is Lava, The Umbrella Academy still owns the second-longest streak of any show on Netflix.

The Most Points Earned in a Single Month

Because Netflix established the Top 10 list earlier this year, we’ve now been able to track which movies and shows dominate the streaming platform over a longer period of time. So at the end of each month, we add up every show’s points and rank them.

And no show has earned more points in a single month period than The Umbrella Academy did during the month of August. Here are the top point earnings for each month this year:

  • Love is Blind – 250 points in March
  • The Trials of Gabriel Hernandez – 153 points in March
  • Tiger King – 243 points in April
  • Ozark – 227 points in April
  • Dead to Me – 204 points in May
  • Outer Banks – 201 points in May
  • 13 Reasons Why – 223 points in June
  • Space Force – 217 points in June
  • Unsolved Mysteries – 196 points in July
  • Down to Earth with Zac Efron – 145 points in July
  • The Umbrella Academy – 271 points in August
  • Shameless – 147 points in August

As you can see, it’s not even close. And while Tiger King did earn more points in a 30-day period, it wasn’t able to squeeze that total in a calendar month.

And even when we narrow down the time period to any 30-day increment, The Umbrella Academy still sits in second place.

The Most Points Earned in the Summer Season

This past season, several shows have made their marks. Shameless dominated the Top 10 for several days; Unsolved Mysteries and Floor is Lava posted 12-day streaks at #1; and The Office has appeared on the Top 10 a whopping 67 times since June 20.

But no show has come close to matching the dominance that was on display with The Umbrella Academy’s second season—in fact, it’s not even close. Here are the top point totals for shows this past summer season:

  1. The Umbrella Academy – 320 points
  2. Shameless – 206 points
  3. Unsolved Mysteries – 196 points
  4. Floor is Lava – 193 points
  5. The Office – 185 points
  6. Lucifer – 183 points
  7. The Last Dance – 177 points
  8. Cobra Kai – 170 points
  9. Cursed – 152 points
  10. Down to Earth with Zac Efron – 145 points

With summer officially ending on September 22, it’s clear that no other show will be catching The Umbrella Academy. Currently, Away and Cobra Kai are posting incredible numbers—and not even those point totals will near The Umbrella Academy.

The Fifth-Most Points Earned This Year

On September 10, The Umbrella Academy may have seen its final day on the Daily Top 10. After 43 consecutive days on the list—which is the fifth-most ever, by the way—the show fell from the Top 10 altogether.

That left the show’s 2020 total at 320 points—also the fifth-most posted this year. Here are the current ten most popular shows on Netflix in 2020:

  1. Tiger King – 387 points
  2. Ozark – 377 points
  3. Outer Banks – 356 points
  4. Avatar: The Last Airbender – 339 points
  5. The Umbrella Academy – 320 points
  6. Love is Blind – 299 points
  7. The Office – 277 points
  8. All American – 266 points
  9. Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich – 261 points
  10. Space Force – 248 points

So while The Umbrella Academy’s second season couldn’t put together a Top 10 streak that matched shows like Tiger King, Outer Banks and Avatar: The Last Airbender, the amount of points The Umbrella Academy earned in such a short period of time must be recognized.

Needless to say, we can expect a third season from The Umbrella Academy.
