LOCALS could soon be living next door to an eyesore £40m theme park after losing a battle to stop a hillside being sold to developers.

Seething residents in Swansea have blasted the works as a “concrete jungle” and desperately tried to reason with the council to reverse their decision.

However, the park – complete with a zip-wire, gondola, sky-swing, luge and open top bar – looks set to begin construction.

Swansea Council discarded the 560 complains from residents, despite only receiving 40 letters of support.

Developers Skyline Enterprises are being backed by £4m from the Welsh Government and £8m from the council.

A council spokesman said: “Everything that’s needed for the scheme is now in place, apart from one area of land that we’re in continuing negotiations with Natural Resources Wales about.

“Our investment is expected to be repaid in full as part of an agreement with Skyline.”

Objectors living next to the hill say their “dream homes” will now be turned to a nightmare because the land will no longer boast “a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife.”

Jane Britton, 62, who has lived on the hill for two decades, expressed her sadness following the greenlit proposal.

She said: “This hill is really special to so many people and we’ve watched it grow up.

“It was supposed to be my dream home and something that was precious has now been scratched and tarnished.”

Her niece Lucy added: “We feel incredibly helpless as we are fighting against giant corporations and councils.”

The New Zealand-based developers say preparatory work is now taking place is to relocate reptiles.

Bird watcher Karl Squires, who lives nearby, said: “I’m just a bit annoyed that they’ve started when they did.”

A spokeswoman for Skyline Enterprises said the supervised reptile relocation work was approved because it had to take place at specific times of year.

She said: “The reptile relocation work is being managed by a team of qualified ecologists who review areas of work before any activity starts each day, ensuring work follows all regulations.

“A strict protocol is to be followed if an issue is found to ensure the best possible outcome. This work has been approved as part of the planning conditions, and no licence is required.”

Councillorr Joe Hale previously blasted Swansea Council’s decision to give the plans the green light.

He said: “It is unforgivable to trade our clean environment for 30 pieces of silver.

“We are handing our heritage over to foreign owners who can do what they want with our only green space on this side of Swansea.

“These people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
