What time do GCSE results come out in 2026?

are released to students from 8am on Thursday, August 20.

That is the earliest moment schools are allowed to hand anything over, not a national release time – some open their doors later in the morning.

Schools receive the results a day earlier, from just after midnight on Wednesday, August 19, but are under a strict embargo until Thursday.

Staff are banned from discussing grades with students, parents, other teachers or anyone else before then, and any breach counts as malpractice.

The date is set by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and covers every board, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA.

Entry-level certificates, foundation and higher projects and most Level 1 and 2 vocational technical qualifications all arrive the same morning.

Can you check GCSE results online?

Some students can log in and see their grades online, but there is no national website where you enter a candidate number and get your results.

Exam boards don’t issue paper results anymore – electronic files are sent to schools.

Each school then decides how to pass them on, whether that means printed slips, an email or a login to its own system.

Emailed results are also allowed, but not before 8am.

Where do use online portals, access is usually limited to the student rather than parents, and some close the system within a fortnight.

So the answer depends entirely on where you sat your exams – ask your exams officer before Thursday rather than assuming.

Can someone else pick up your results for you?

Most schools will allow it, but only if you arrange it beforehand.

Typically that means a letter signed by the student naming the person collecting being handed to the exams officer before results day, with the nominated adult bringing photo ID on the morning.

Some schools accept an email sent directly from the student, although many refuse text messages or a photos of a signed note.

Policies on posting uncollected results also differ – some send them out that same afternoon, while others will not post them under any circumstances.

What do GCSE grades mean?

England uses the , where 9 is the highest grade and 4 is broadly a standard pass.

Grade 4 is around the bottom end of the old C grade, with grade 5 a strong pass sitting between a high C and a low B.

Wales has stuck with letter grades, while students in Northern Ireland may receive either system or a combination of both.

What can you do if you think your grade is wrong?

A comes first, which checks whether the mark scheme was applied correctly rather than marking the paper afresh.

Requests have to go through your school, so the exams officer is the first person to speak to, and written consent is needed because marks can fall as well as rise.

Boards must receive requests by Thursday, September 24, 2026, and you then have 30 calendar days from the outcome to lodge a formal appeal.
