MANCHESTER UNITED have already begun the hunt for their next permanent manager, despite Michael Carrick’s impressive early run in charge.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former Red Devils captain lifted the lid on the club’s current thinking behind the scenes.

revealed he directly asked United chiefs what their official stance was on a new manager was amid growing speculation Carrick could be handed the reins.

The former right back confirmed that the club told him they had “actually begun” the process of identifying and assessing potential candidates.

He said: “I asked the club ‘what is the official position of the club in terms of what you’re saying publicly to everybody else?’

“They said ‘we’ve actually begun our process now of starting to look for another manager'”

That revelation suggests the hierarchy are planning long-term rather than reacting to short-term results.

Neville explained United are determined not to be forced into a quick appointment regardless of wins, draws or defeats over the coming weeks.

Instead, the club intend to wait until closer to the end of the season before making any final decision.

That approach leaves Carrick in a strong but uncertain position after an eye-catching start to his interim spell.

The former midfielder has overseen four consecutive victories since stepping into the dugout, steadying a turbulent campaign.

Despite that momentum, Neville suggested results alone will not guarantee him the permanent role.

However, he added that Carrick would be included in the formal recruitment process if he chooses to officially put himself forward.

Neville said: “If says ‘I want to put my name in the hat’, Carrick would go into a process.”
