The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the Federal Government for what it terms ineffective and poor communication following a reported strike by the United States on terrorist assets in Nigeria.
The statement was issued on Friday and signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
According to the party, Nigerians first became aware of the operation through verified social media accounts of former U.S. President Donald Trump and other American officials, well before Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement acknowledging the country’s awareness and cooperation.
The PDP noted that the delayed and “vague” response from the Federal Government raised concerns regarding Nigeria’s communication framework on critical national security issues.
“While we appreciate international collaboration in the fight against terrorism, it is concerning that foreign entities announce security operations on Nigerian territory before our own government does,” the party stated.
The PDP asserted that such a tactic does not benefit either the Federal Government or the citizens, especially given past reports indicating that U.S. forces had conducted operations in Nigeria without prior notification or approval from Nigerian authorities.
The opposition party emphasized that the Federal Government should have taken the initiative to inform citizens about the strike to adequately prepare the public, rather than merely confirming information that was already widely disseminated.
“Anything less than this gives the impression that the government was either unprepared or caught off guard, just like ordinary citizens,” the statement added.
The PDP also urged the Federal Government to ensure that any defense agreements with the United States prioritize joint operations that foster knowledge sharing and experiential learning for Nigerian security agencies.
It cautioned against dependence on entirely externally-led “precision attacks,” highlighting that sustainable solutions to insecurity necessitate enhancing Nigeria’s own capabilities.
