The Niger State Government has instructed communities along the River Niger and River Kaduna to move to safer locations.

This directive was issued in response to a flood alert due to the release of water from the Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jeba hydroelectric dams.

Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), stated that this action follows a warning from the Nigerian Hydrological Services, advising communities along these rivers to evacuate.

Arah clarified that the agency's warning is prompted by the discharge of water from the Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jeba hydroelectric dams located within Niger State.

He noted that the dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water each minute, which could result in the overflow of both rivers.

“The state government strongly advises our communities to minimize activities near riverbanks during this peak rainy season to prevent flooding. Individuals residing in riverine areas should relocate to the safer locations that have already been identified,” he said.

“The latest prediction from NiMET suggests that the end of the rainy season will be accompanied by violent windstorms, so people should avoid standing under trees during rainfall and steer clear of substandard structures,” he added.

The local government areas affected include Lavun, Magama, Rafi, Kontagora, Gbako, Mokwa, Lapai, Katcha, Agaie, Suleja, Shiroro, Mashegu, Agwara, Bida, Edati, Munya, Bosso, Chanchaga, Paikoro, and Wushishi.
