Young environmental advocates are actively addressing air pollution in schools and markets throughout the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to support government initiatives aimed at promoting clean energy and safeguarding public health.

The campaign, titled Breathe Clean Air Abuja, is part of a public-private partnership under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), spearheaded by Minister Nyesom Wike.

This initiative seeks to raise awareness about the hazards of using charcoal and firewood for cooking while promoting the use of gas stoves in over 5,000 households across the six area councils.

Members of the youth group visited prominent markets and schools in Abuja, distributing flyers, engaging with students, and informing traders about environmental protection and clean energy practices.

During the event, the Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, stated that the administration is collaborating with Rotaract Clubs and other partners to educate young people about the health risks associated with air pollution. She emphasized that this partnership would enhance outreach efforts and motivate youth-led initiatives for environmental sustainability.

The advocacy group, led by Ms. Daniella Omotola, a Rotaractor and behavioral advocate, included members from various Rotaract Clubs and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Omotola mentioned that the team is employing interactive methods such as competitions, debates, talent hunts, and social media challenges to engage students and foster creativity in environmental protection.

“Air pollution impacts our planet and our lives,” she remarked. “As young people, we must take action to safeguard our environment for future generations.”

Omotola expressed her gratitude to the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, and Dr. Fasawe for their support and belief in the youth's ability to effect change through the ‘Breathe Clean Air Abuja’ project, which is set to officially launch on November 13.
