A fraudulent lawyer, known only as U.T Oghenetejiri, was apprehended on Thursday at the Magistrate Court in Orhunwhorhun, located in the Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

The individual, who was involved in a civil case being heard in court, was caught by members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Udu Branch’s Anti-Fake Lawyer Committee, led by David Omage and G. Fenfe, after he failed to answer a question posed by the magistrate.

Instead of responding, he fled, prompting court staff and lawyers to pursue him to the Orhuwhorun market, where he was ultimately captured.

It was disclosed that Oghenetejiri had been attending courts in the area for several months, allegedly acting as a legal representative while falsely claiming to be a qualified attorney.

His inconsistent legal arguments and evasive responses regarding his legal education raised significant concerns.

The Chairman of NBA Udu Branch, Edmund Odohisi, Esq., stated that the association had received prior complaints regarding someone impersonating a lawyer and had initiated a discreet investigation.

“We took this matter very seriously because the integrity of the legal profession is at stake,” Odohisi remarked.

“When he appeared again at Orhuwhorun court, our team took action.”

After apprehending the suspect, Udu lawyers, with the help of court security, detained Oghenetejiri and turned him over to the police for further investigation.

Initial findings indicated that he had been preparing legal documents, forging a stamp and seal, and even maintained an office on Jakpa Road in Effurun.

At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of several copies of deeds of transfer and other legal materials.

Investigations confirmed that the suspect had never attended law school and is not listed among the legal practitioners registered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria—a necessary requirement to practice law in the country.

This incident has raised new concerns regarding regulatory oversight and the urgent need for stricter verification processes within Nigeria’s judicial system.

Legal professionals throughout the state have commended the swift actions of the Udu NBA, urging vigilance to safeguard the integrity of the legal profession.

The Udu NBA has called upon the public to report any suspicious legal practitioners and has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and ethical standards.

As of the latest reports, Oghenetejiri remains in custody at the Ovwian Police Station, awaiting his arraignment.
