The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, stated on Wednesday that the residents of the Niger Delta region must ensure that international oil companies and other entities operating on their land adhere to the International Organization Standards (IOS) and the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) if they genuinely wish to protect their natural resources.
The Speaker made this statement at the second edition of the Ijaw Publishers Forum, which took place in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The theme of the conference was "Safeguarding Niger Delta's Natural Resources for Future Generations."
Guwor, who was represented by a former Oil & Gas Chief, Emma Amgbaduba, remarked, "If you become complacent, you will encounter crises, and those crises will hinder your development."
He emphasized that the community must also take responsibility for their environment and praised TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) for their efforts in combating oil theft and protecting the Niger Delta environment.
Guwor further stated that the people should educate themselves on the right subjects to coexist peacefully within their communities, which will facilitate future growth and development in their areas.
According to him, "We must live harmoniously with our communities. However, we cannot achieve this while allowing others to narrate our stories for us. We need to share our own narratives."
Guwor applauded the leadership of the Ijaw Publishers Forum for their commitment to the Niger Delta cause and for telling their stories in the manner they envision.
