Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno on Tuesday moved a motion at the Senate to reverse the upper chamber’s previous decision regarding Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Repeal and Enactment Bill.
During an emergency plenary session, Monguno stated that the motion recalled the bill was originally passed by the Senate on Wednesday, 4th February 2026.
He highlighted emerging issues surrounding Clause 60(3), which deals with the method of transmitting election results, noting that the matter requires careful consideration to ensure credible and transparent elections.
Monguno emphasized that the clause requires careful consideration to ensure the conduct of smooth, transparent, and credible elections across the country.
Relying on the provisions of Orders 1B and 52-6 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended), the senator moved to rescind the earlier decision on Clause 60(3) and recommit it for further consideration and passage.
Speaking on the floor, Monguno explained that the move comes after controversy arose over whether the clause should mandate “transfer” or “transmission” of election results electronically.
He noted that he had previously moved a motion for the retention of the existing Act, prompting the current amendment proposal.
