A tense confrontation erupted on Tuesday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, engaged in a heated exchange with police officers during the ongoing protest.
Amaechi, who joined other demonstrators at the National Assembly, was seen challenging security operatives.
The former governor participated in the protest to demand the real-time electronic transmission of election results, a key issue fueling public outrage following the Senate’s rejection of the proposal in the ongoing electoral reform process.
The demonstration, tagged ‘Occupy the National Assembly’, saw Nigerian youths converge in Abuja to protest what they described as a setback to credible elections and democratic transparency.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined demonstrators a day earlier in solidarity with the call for electoral reforms.
The protest comes amid growing pressure on lawmakers to reconsider their stance on e-transmission of election results as concerns over electoral integrity continue to dominate national discourse.
