Sea and sun are part of the perfect vacation for many. Some like it hot, some fresh. Europe has tens of thousands of kilometers of coastline, which attract a wide variety of dream beaches. Here is a selection:
Bizarre rock formations, golden beaches and dreamy bays – the Algarve is Portugal’s most popular holiday region. With more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year, it is one of the absolute leaders in Europe. Castelo beach near Albufeira is great for diving and snorkeling.
The largest island in the Mediterranean lures with medieval towns and ancient ruins. And it is also a swimming paradise. Miles of long, often deserted sandy beaches stretch along the coast, framed by white cliffs, as here at Eraclea Minoa. You can go to the sea until late in the autumn because Africa is directly opposite.
Atlantic coast, France
The perfect wave rolls here: Hossegor is very popular among surfers. The small town on the southern French Atlantic coast scores with straight sandbanks and waves up to three meters high. International surf competitions have also taken place here since the 1970s.
The largest Greek island attracts with an ancient culture, with clear sea and wide beaches. The bay of Elafonisi is on the southwestern tip. The pink colored shell sand gives the beach a touch of the Caribbean.
The Baltic Sea island is a natural paradise and holiday destination. Cars are prohibited with a few exceptions. There are no hotel castles. To explore Hiddensee with its bird sanctuaries, tourists use bicycles and horse-drawn carriages – or go on foot.
The Devon coast is known as the “English Riviera”, the Gulf Stream ensures a pleasant climate. There are many small holiday resorts, such as Woolacombe: the six-kilometer-long sandy beach is rarely overcrowded even in summer.
Not only tourists on the Mediterranean relax on the Iztuzu beach. The rare hawksbill turtles also lay their eggs here. The beach is therefore closed in the evening. Around the town of Dalyan there are rock tombs and architectural relics from the time of the Roman Empire.
The Danish island of Römö has the widest beach in Europe: up to six kilometers have to be covered up to the water. It is more convenient to drive directly to the North Sea by car – this is allowed on the island. Beach sailors and riders also like to use the slopes.
Adriatic coast, Montenegro
The sandy beaches of Montenegro are no longer an insider tip, they are now almost as well known as those of their big neighbor Croatia. Jaz Bay near the city of Budva, which is worth a day trip with its old town and fortress, is particularly popular.
Baltic Sea coast, Lithuania
The Curonian Spit stretches 98 kilometers along the Baltic Sea. The largest hiking dune in Europe rises near the resort of Nidden. “You think you are in the Sahara,” wrote writer Thomas Mann about his summer home in Nidden 80 years ago.
Balearic Island is considered a hotspot of the European house and techno scene. In Ibiza, you can dance the night away and chill out by the sea. For example, Benirras beach is famous for spectacular sunsets.
