Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has encouraged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) not to be disheartened by the current challenges facing Nigeria.

Makinde delivered this message during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 Batch C Corps members in Iseyin, Oyo State, on Friday.

Represented by Mrs. Kudirat Mustapha, Director of Youth Development at the Oyo State Ministry of Youth and Sports, he noted that the corps members are entering service at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic and security issues.

He reminded them that challenging times often give rise to the most innovative thinkers and the most resilient leaders.

The governor emphasized that Nigeria's identity is not shaped by its challenges but by the skills and determination of individuals like the corps members.

“Do not lose hope in your future and do not lose faith in this great nation,” he stated.

Makinde urged them to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program seriously.

“In today’s world, self-sufficiency and innovation are essential for economic survival. Many of your predecessors have become job creators by leveraging the skills they gained during their service year.

“You too can write your own success story. The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the NYSC, will continue to support initiatives that promote your safety, welfare, and empowerment,” he added.

In his comments, the NYSC Coordinator in Oyo State, Mr. Kayode Peters, stated that the orientation course, which serves as the initial phase and entry point of the NYSC, is more than just a mandatory step in national service.

Peters mentioned that the scheme acts as a melting pot of cultures, allowing young Nigerians to appreciate diversity, understand the strength of unity, and develop discipline, teamwork, and essential life skills needed for their service year and beyond.

He affirmed that the NYSC is dedicated to enhancing the orientation course framework for greater relevance and a more profound impact on national service.

The coordinator reported that a total of 3,598 prospective corps members, including 1,036 males and 2,562 females, have successfully registered for the orientation course in Oyo State.

He encouraged the corps members to embody the values of discipline, hard work, and patriotism, and to maximize the opportunities presented during this orientation course.

Peters praised Makinde for his support of the NYSC in the state, as well as the security agencies and community leaders for ensuring the safety of corps members and other residents in the area.
