DALTON SMITH joined Britain’s stable of world boxing champions with a sublime knockout win over Subriel Matias.

Sheffield-born Smith, 28, clinched the WBC super-lightweight belt on Saturday night after putting Matias down with a big right hand in round five.

The fighter wobbled after getting back to his feet at Barclays Centre in and the referee waved it off.

Smith suffered a nasty cut above his eye from a headbutt in round four but still became the first fighter to , whose record has dipped to 23-3.

Promoter had warned Smith not to throw caution to the wind early in the fight as Matias could capitalise.

He said: “The one thing you don’t want to do is start taking shots too early. It’s going to come if you don’t stop him.

“There are going to be rounds where he starts to get his momentum and find a little bit of success. You’ve got to delay that as late as possible.”

Smith knew he was playing a dangerous game but still found the decisive blow in the first half of the fight and extended his unblemished record to 19-0.

The fan is now one of five British world champions and could stage his first title defence at Hillsborough.

Smith said: “Listen, it’s the first time in my career I’ve been the underdog and the first time I’ve fought a monster.

“Take nothing away from Subriel – he’s a great champion.

“I didn’t really stick to the tactics tonight. I played him at his own game. You can’t hurt me and I knew I’d get to him.

“Bring on the challenges. I’m one of the best, if not the best in the division. I’m ready to mix it up with everyone.”

Hearn added: “Smith has announced himself as a superstar. The future is unbelievable. Now, fighting at Hillsborough is a reality.”
