CRISTIAN ROMERO’S dad has claimed the Tottenham defender has a release clause amid uncertainty over his future.

The Argentine has been strongly linked with an exit from in recent months and their disaster season may push him closer to the edge.

are said to be keen on the Spurs captain, who’s current contract runs until 2029.

And now ‘s father Victor has added fuel to the flames by discussing the details of his deal in a recent interview.

He told Cadena 3 : “He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause.

“The English club won’t let him leave for free; it’s between $50-70m [£37.8m-£53m]. For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested.”

Romero started his career with Argentinian side Belgrano and then moved to Genoa in 2018.

After just one year, he joined but never played for the club. He was loaned back to Genoa and and also had a spell with Atalanta before his switch to north London.

Victor said he would love his son to re-join to boyhood club Belgrano one day after rumours of a possible return circulating in Argentina.

He added: “It’s a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. I wish it were true; as a Belgrano fan and a father, what more could I want, but I don’t know anything.’

Romero has spoken out a number of times in recent months to criticise the Tottenham board over their decision making.

He recently after failing to properly bolster the squad in January despite their injury crisis.

And he also and claimed they “only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies”.

Victor said it wasn’t like his son to be so outspoken and admitted “anything can happen” over his future.

He said: “Cuti isn’t one to make statements, that’s why it surprises me.

“I don’t know anything, but in football, anything can happen.

“Today, you might be thinking about being close to your family, and tomorrow, they put together a team to win the championship, and everything changes. I don’t want to lie.”

Romero has played 155 times for Spurs, scoring 13 goals. He led the club to their first trophy in 17 years by helping them win the Europa League last summer.

But this season he is fighting to keep them away from relegation.

The team are currently 17th and one point off the relegation zone after 13 games without a win.
