The Ebonyi State chapter of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools has requested a twelve-month grace period from the state government to enable them to meet the criteria established for school standardization in the state.
During a briefing with journalists in Abakaliki on Tuesday, the state chairman of the association, Mr. Felix Nomeh, stated that the association is in discussions with the government concerning recent educational reforms aimed at ensuring quality education in primary and secondary schools.
Nomeh acknowledged the proactive measures taken by the state government through the state commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang. He emphasized that while many of the policies and reforms have been in place, the serious commitment demonstrated by the current administration is remarkable.
He noted that these policies and reforms are beneficial, as they aim to enhance the standard of education in the state, allowing children in Ebonyi to compete effectively with their peers nationwide.
The state chairman also recognized the issue of a growing number of substandard schools in the state, particularly among faith-based institutions.
He condemned the prevalence of quackery within the state's educational system, stressing that the association is committed to collaborating with the state government.
Regarding the closure of schools, the chairman stated that all rational individuals should support the government’s decision to ensure quality education in a conducive environment for children. However, he urged the government to grant them a 12-month grace period to comply with the criteria set forth.
He remarked, “We cannot resort to blackmail or conflict with the government. Our appeal for a 12-month grace period is intended to allow those affected to meet the requirements established by the government.”
According to him, “The appeal is still in progress; we cannot remain passive as an organization,” he asserted.
The chairman also urged the government to take into account any school that has acquired land and has made significant or substantial progress in development.
Furthermore, he suggested that secondary schools that have received establishment approval should automatically be granted the ability to operate primary schools, as they fall under the same segment of the 9-3-4 education system.
Mr. Nomeh took this opportunity to advise private school proprietors to put in the effort and consult the relevant authorities within NAPPS during the process of securing adequate site approval and establishment with the Ministry of Education for potential inspections.
