The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has urged Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies to enhance their investigations into digitally facilitated corruption, strengthen whistleblower protections, and address political interference that compromises the effectiveness of enforcement institutions.
This message was conveyed in a statement signed by the Executive Director, Y.Z. Ya’u, to mark the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD).
Ya’u emphasized that corruption remains one of the most significant threats to Nigeria’s development, security, and democratic stability.
“Throughout the nation, corruption continues to weaken public institutions, hinder service delivery, escalate insecurity, and diminish citizens’ trust in governance,” the statement indicated.
Despite the efforts of government agencies and civil society organizations, he noted that corruption persists in procurement processes, public finance management, electoral systems, and digital governance, all of which necessitate renewed political commitment and comprehensive reforms.
CITAD underscored that the anti-corruption initiative must now fully embrace digital environments, where a lack of transparency, inadequate regulations, and the misuse of power create new avenues for misconduct.
It cautioned against the growing trend of using digital platforms to suppress dissenting voices, labeling it a threat to democratic engagement.
“Digital channels are the most accessible means for citizens to voice their opinions. Therefore, the government must not only accept digital expression but also prevent the misuse of security agencies to intimidate or harass citizens for voicing dissent,” the organization asserted.
“Without safe and open online civic spaces, Nigeria’s commitment to combating corruption will remain merely rhetorical.”
CITAD called on all levels of government and relevant stakeholders to enhance transparency and accountability systems throughout all tiers of government, promote digital accountability—especially in procurement and the management of public data and digital infrastructure—and fully enforce the Freedom of Information Act to ensure unrestricted access to public records.
The organization reiterated its appeal for anti-corruption agencies to prioritize cases of digital corruption, improve whistleblower protection frameworks, and eliminate political interference that undermines their effectiveness.
The theme for this year is “United Against Corruption for Development, Peace, and Security.”
