The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, in Benue State, Wilfred Anagbe, has urged President Donald Trump of the United States to accompany the renewed designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) with concrete actions.

Bishop Anagbe made this request on Thursday while providing testimony before the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa, which is examining Trump's redesignation of Nigeria as a CPC.

He stated, “On behalf of millions of Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora, we would like to express our gratitude to President Donald Trump for his courageous leadership in designating Nigeria as a CPC. I commend you and this subcommittee for your ongoing efforts regarding this issue.

“This is a crucial step, but it must be supported by significant action. First, implement the Magnitsky Act to impose targeted sanctions against Nigerian government officials and others who tolerate or condone Islamic violence in the country.”

The bishop also urged lawmakers to link security and humanitarian aid to measurable improvements.

“Increase humanitarian support for internally displaced persons (IDPs). The IDPs must be allowed to return to their ancestral homes, which requires security assurances from the Nigerian Government,” he emphasized.

Bishop Anagbe informed lawmakers that many Christian victims in Benue continue to suffer from trauma, noting that one priest he knows is unable to walk after surviving a terrorist attack.

He accused the federal government of minimizing casualty figures and neglecting the needs of survivors from repeated assaults.

Anagbe also contended that President Donald Trump’s previous CPC designation “sought to stabilize Nigeria” but “has exacerbated the safety concerns for Christians.”
