The number of deaths confirmed by the new coronavirus in China increased to at least 490 after authorities in Hubei province announced on Wednesday (05.02.2020) another 65 deaths.
The provincial Health Commission of Hubei (center), the focus of the new epidemic, also reported a sharp increase in the number of infected people, with 3,156 new cases confirmed. The number of carriers of the virus exceeds 23,500 in mainland China, taking into account the figures previously reported by the central government.
The epidemic – which has become a global health emergency – began in December in a wholesale food market in the city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. To date, cases have been registered in more than 20 countries.
With the exception of a Chinese man from Wuhan who died in the Philippines and another patient in Hong Kong, who had been in Wuhan at the end of January, all people killed by this new coronavirus are in mainland China.
