Chile issues tsunami warning after 7.4 magnitude earthquake

The Chilean government has issued a tsunami warning after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s southernmost region.

The government ordered the people to evacuate the coastal area in the south of the country after the high magnitude earthquake.

The Chilean disaster agency issued the warning for an area of the remote Magallanes region on Chile’s southern tip.

The United States, US, Geological Survey said the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck 219km (136 miles) off the coast of the city of Ushuaia, in Argentina on Friday at 13.58 local time.

Aftershocks have been reported in the region.

The quake struck in the Drake Passage, the body of water separating South America and Antarctica.

Reacting, President Gabriel Boric posted on X after an alert from the SENAPRED emergency service.

“We call for evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region,”; Boric wrote.

The emergency service has also ordered evacuations in the nearby Antarctic areas.
