South America is increasingly becoming the focus of the corona pandemic. In addition to Brazil, Chile has also been hit hard. This now has personnel consequences in the country’s government.
Previously, the steadily increasing Corona cases in the South American state had caused heated controversy. Although the capital city of Santiago de Chile has been in quarantine for more than a month, the number of infected people has recently skyrocketed. On Friday, the authorities also had a record of new deaths – 222 in 24 hours. This increased the number of corona deaths in Chile to a total of more than 3,100 and the number of infected to over 167,000.
Mañalich has been criticized by politicians, experts and various social groups, among others, for not having implemented measures to contain the pandemic earlier. The cask finally overflowed with a report that Chile’s Ministry of Health informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of far more corona deaths than was released to the public.
Brazil meanwhile rose to the country with the second most corona deaths worldwide. Almost 43,000 deaths were officially counted there by Saturday. The largest country in Latin America thus overtook the United Kingdom (almost 42,000 dead). Only the United States has more deaths (around 115,000) related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Regardless of developments in Brazil, corona protective measures are being relaxed there. Shops and beaches are now open again, and long lines have formed in front of shopping centers. In many places, everyday life almost reminded of the times before the pandemic.
