It was a shocking moment on Thursday during the celebration of the 70th birthday of the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Epiphany Azinge, SAN, when the Odogwu (Chief Warrior) of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, collapsed and reportedly passed away.

An eyewitness reported, “Oduah suddenly fell at the reception area, creating panic among the guests and dignitaries present at the event.”

This tragic incident has sent ripples of shock throughout the state capital.

“He was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, but sadly, he was declared dead by doctors shortly after his arrival,” the witness added.

As of the time of this report, details regarding the circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Earlier, Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, had characterized the esteemed monarch’s reign as one marked by peace and humility.

He extended his congratulations to the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, on his 70th birthday at the thanksgiving Mass held at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, West-End, Asaba, which celebrated the royal father’s platinum jubilee. He remarked that the Asagba’s life serves as a shining example of wisdom, integrity, and purpose.

“I am truly pleased to be part of this celebration because it is vital to return to God in appreciation when He elevates you to a particular level in life. This thanksgiving is significant; it is not merely another birthday; it is an expression of gratitude for seventy years of divine mercy, strength, and grace,” he stated.

The Governor emphasized the importance of the Asagba expressing thanks to God for His grace and faithfulness, having reached the biblical age of three score and ten in good health and strength.

He praised the life and leadership of the monarch, highlighting that his reign has been characterized by peace, humility, and understanding.

Quoting Proverbs 16:31, the Governor referred to the monarch’s gray hair as “a crown of glory earned through a righteous life,” and prayed that God would continue to bestow upon him strength, wisdom, and longevity.

In his earlier homily, the Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, described the occasion as a time for thanksgiving and reflection on a life dedicated to God and humanity.

Drawing inspiration from Psalm 90, the Cardinal stated, “The Bible reminds us that seventy is the sum of our years. It is a moment to reflect with gratitude and look ahead with faith.”

He commended the Asagba for his unwavering faith, wisdom, and compassion, labeling him “a true monarch who has served God and humanity with love, integrity, and dedication.”
