The United States women&#8217;s national team have won the last two World Cups, but their 2016 Olympics was a rare failure as the team failed to medal for the first time in six tournaments.
After being <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-sweden-olympics-video-highlights-analysis-reaction" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">hammered in their opening group game by Sweden</a>, the <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-new-zealand-video-highlights-olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">USWNT hammered New Zealand to get back on track</a> and then <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-australia-video-highlights-recap-reaction-analysis" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">drew with Australia</a> to finish second in Group G and limp into the knockout rounds.
Due to finishing second in their group, the USWNT will now face the Netherlands (the number four ranked team in the world who scored 21 goals in the group stage&#8230;) in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final.
Sweden won Group G with a perfect three wins out of three, Great Britain won Group E and remain unbeaten and racked up seven points, while the Netherlands won Group F and edged out Brazil on goal difference as they both finished with seven points.

Hosts Japan and an emerging Australia side clinched the final two spots in the quarterfinals as the best-placed third-place teams.
The goal of the tournament so far is from Dominique Janssen, who scored an incredible free kick for the Netherlands against Brazil, and you can see her stunning strike in the video below. What a hit.

The USWNT is through to the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after surviving a penalty shootout with the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Vivianne Miedema beat Alyssa Naeher twice, but it was their shootout encounter which proved decisive and a chance for redemption. Sam Mewis and Lynn Williams got the goals for the USWNT, who first came back from a goal down and then coughed up a 2-1 lead after halftime.

<h4>3 things we learned: USWNT &#8211; Netherlands</h4>
1. No one makes you pay like Miedema: Inexplicably, no one stepped to Miedema in the middle of the penalty area as she scored he first goal, and Naeher made a mess of a seemingly tame strike as the 25-year-old Dutch goal machine bagged her second. These are inexcusable mistakes against a player of Miedema&#8217;s caliber — she&#8217;s more than good enough to beat you at your best, let alone when you give her one (or two) for free.
2. Where there&#8217;s a Will(iams), there&#8217;s a way: Williams was called upon to make her first start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and all she did was deliver a goal and an assist in her 57-minute shift. Williams was the bolt of lightning needed to shock the USWNT awake after a slow start — both on Friday and throughout these Olympic Games.
3. Substitutions made the USWNT worse: Vlatko Andonovski made a triple-change just before the hour mark, with the USWNT 2-1 ahead, and there&#8217;s hardly a logical defense to be argued in favor of the move. Taking Williams off made the USWNT narrower and slower on the counter-attack, and taking Mewis off made them anything but dangerous on balls played into the box. Given those are the ways in which the USWNT scored its two goals, it&#8217;s a strange decision by Andonovski, to say the least.
Player of the Match: Lynn Williams &#8211; Just go ahead and say she&#8217;s starting in the semifinals, Vlatko. Cool? Cool.

<h4>Recap &amp; highlights: USWNT &#8211; Netherlands</h4>
Miedema opened the scoring after 18 minutes, and what a sensational strike it was from the Arsenal superstar. The USWNT defense seemed to switch off ever so briefly as the ball bounced near the penalty spot, and that&#8217;s all the time and space Miedema needed to swivel and snap a shot into the bottom corner.
The lead last just 10 minutes, though, as Mewis headed home from Williams&#8217; cross in the 28th minute and then Williams turned home a volley of her own three minutes later.

Miedema struck again in the 54th minute to pull the Netherlands level at 2-2 and cross the 10-goal threshold at the 2020 Olympics. Miedema scored four, two, two and two goals in her four appearances in Tokyo.

Christen Press was denied a potential winner in the 63rd minute, when she turned home Lindsey Horan&#8217;s fantastic ball into the box from an ever so narrowly offside position. It was the second time an American player had a goal ruled out for offside after Tobin Heath sniped the far corner in transition during the first half.
Disaster looked like striking and sending the USWNT home in the 80th minute after Kelley O&#8217;Hara barged through the back of Lineth Beerensteyn. Fortunately for the Americans, it was Lieke Martens who took the ensuing penalty kick, and she placed it comfortably within Naeher&#8217;s reach.

Naeher began the penalty shootout by denying Miedema in the first round and Rose Lavelle converted to put the USWNT ahead from the start. Three rounds later, Naeher stone-walled Aniek Nouwen and Megan Rapinoe hammered the USWNT&#8217;s fourth and final spot kick into the upper-90.
Up next for the USWNT is a rematch of their epic 2012 Olympic semifinal clash with Canada, on Monday (4 am ET).

USWNT bounces Netherlands on penalties to reach Olympic semifinals

The USMNT continued to simply outlast and outlive their opponents at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, as the Yanks were very much second-best to Qatar for long stretches of Thursday&#8217;s semifinal, yet the scoreboard read 1-0 to the Americans at full-time.

Gyasi Zardes scored the only goal of the game with very little time remaining in the second half, and it wasn&#8217;t until quite late that the USMNT — the group serving as the de facto B-team for this Gold Cup — looked the likelier side to win.
Qatar could have scored the winner on a handful occasions early in the game and the 2022 World Cup hosts acquitted themselves incredibly well throughout their run at the Gold Cup as a guest nation.
Each side threatened to score the opening goal inside the first 10 minutes. Qatar went close first, in the 7th minute, when James Sands gave the ball away cheaply and Almoez Ali let a shot fly from the edge of the penalty area. Fortunately for Sands and goalkeeper Matt Turner, Ali pulled it a foot wide of the post.

Two minutes later, Sebastian Lletget uncorked a hard-hit, bouncing effort to test Meshaal Barsham, but Lletget&#8217;s shot was hit right at Barsham who spilled the rebound to an offside Paul Arriola, whom he also denied from close range.
Qatar nearly took the lead again in the 19th minute, only to be denied by a fantastic reaction save by Turner. The initial shot came from 35 yards out but the ball took a major deflection off Sands, seemingly redirecting it into the bottom-right corner of Turner&#8217;s goal. Turner was quick across and quick to get down and push it wide.
The Qataris went even closer after the ensuing restart, forcing Turner to go even bigger to keep the score level at 0-0. Akram Afif again fired from the edge of the box, and the ball again took a wicked deflection to send it looping high in the air. Abdulaziz Hatem got under it and appeared to have lobbed the ball over Turner with a first-time finish, but Turner scrambled backward and somehow managed to palm the ball away from danger.

The USMNT began the second half much better than they finished the first and the Yanks so nearly broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. Daryl Dike got on the end of Matthew Hoppe&#8217;s tantalizing cross from the left side. Dike met the ball in the face of goal, but Barsham was quick to rush out and make himself big to make the save.

Barely a minute later, video review revealed that Qatar had been unjustly denied a penalty kick. Sands went in to win the ball as Afif slalomed his way into the box, getting very little or none of the ball as their knees slammed together. Unfortunately for Qatar, Hassan Al-Haydos lobbed his spot kick over the crossbar.

Qatar fell flatter and flatter with each passing minute after the penalty miss, and the USMNT seized control of the game with a triple-sub in the 63rd minute. Head coach Gregg Berhalter managed to ramp up pressure on the ball and begin winning it back higher up the field as a result of the fresh legs.
Said pressure resulted in Zardes&#8217; 86th-minute winner, and it was Zardes who set in motion the sequence which eventually led to him scoring. Zardes forced a desperate clearance that Nicholas Gioacchini chased down and quickly burst upfield on the attack. Gioacchini worked his way into the penalty area and raced toward the end line before cutting the ball back to Zardes, who arrived perfectly late to sweep it home.

The Men&#8217;s Olympic Soccer tournament has delivered drama, goals and shocks galore during the group stage.
After being postponed due to COVID, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will take place in Tokyo, Japan, Friday, July 23 – Sunday, August 8, 2021.

The USMNT failed to make the Olympics again, opening the door for Honduras to join Mexico from the CONCACAF region for the 2020 games in Tokyo.
What a start to the tournament it has been with some Premier League stars lighting it up in Japan, plus plenty of emerging stars also putting on a show with some shock results.
Hosts Japan have won both of their opening games, but they are the only perfect team through the first two rounds of games and there is so much to play for heading into the final group stage games.

The top story of men&#8217;s Olympic soccer was undoubtedly the massive upsets which occurred and saw all four of Argentina, France, Germany and South Korea beaten (heavily, in some cases) on day 1. Therefore, the story of day 2 was the rebound victories of four of the tournament&#8217;s favorites.
That&#8217;s not to say that every — or any — one of them were easy. Take France as an example: After being hammered 4-1 by Mexico, Les Bleus found themselves 3-2 down to South Africa in the 85th minute. France were then awarded a penalty, Andre-Pierre Gignac (Tigres) converted to complete his hat trick for 3-3 and Teji Savanier (Montpellier) thumped a low strike from the edge of the box in stoppage time for a late, dramatic 4-3 win.
As comfortable as South Korea&#8217;s 4-0 victory over Romania looks on paper, the truth is it was a 2-0 game into the 84th minute. Then came a quick-fire double from Valencia starlet Lee Kang-In in the 84th and 90th minutes to put the game away. Germany had even more trouble with Saudi Arabia, who erased a pair of one-goal deficits in there 3-2 defeat. The score was 2-2 and Germany were a man down for the final 23 minutes, but Felix Uduokhai (Augsburg) found a winner in the 75th anyway.
Same story for Argentina: level at 0-0 for 50 minutes, grabbed a goal through defender Facundo Medina (Lens) in the 52nd and held on for three points.

A pair of massive underdogs, Australia (+560) and New Zealand (+580), pulled off shocking upsets on the opening day of the men&#8217;s Olympic soccer tournament as they beat Argentina and South Korea, respectively, on Thursday.
Lachlan Wales (Western United, A-League) opened the scoring after minutes and Marco Tilio (Melbourne City, A-League) put the game to bed with a second goal in the 80th. Francisco Ortega was sent off in first-half stoppage time, leaving Argentina with just 10 men for the entire second half. In the day&#8217;s other upset, Burnley forward Chris Wood scored the only goal in New Zealand&#8217;s 1-0 victory over South Korea.
The premier opening-day clash saw Brazil batter Germany to the tune of 4-2, thanks to a hat trick Richarlison. The Everton forward made it 1-0 in the 7th minute, doubled the lead in the 22nd and had his (and Brazil&#8217;s) third by the 30-minute mark. Germany pulled back to 3-2 through Nadiem Amiri (Bayer Leverkusen) and Ragnar Ache (Eintracht Frankfurt) in the 57th and 84th minutes, but Paulinho (Bayer Leverkusen) made it 4-2 in stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Mexico throttled France 4-1. Alexis Vega (Chivas de Guadalajara), Francisco Cordova (Club America), Uriel Antuna (Chivas de Guadalajara) and Eduardo Aguirre (Santos Laguna) got the goals for El Tri under-23s. Andre-Pierre Gignac converted from the penalty spot, with France down 2-0, midway through the second half.

The rest of 2021 is set to be a hugely important time for the USMNT as they won the CONCACAF Nations League, and have now made a deep run in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, while 2022 World Cup qualifying kicks off in September.

The USMNT has named an extremely young squad, while Mexico are the heavy favorites to defend their crown and the final four has been set.
Guest team Qatar will play the USMNT in the semifinals in Austin on Saturday, while Mexico will face Canada in Houston on the same day for a place in the final.
This year&#8217;s tournament will be played in nine stadiums and seven cities across the United States, with 16 nations — 15 from the region and one guest nation, Qatar.
12 nations qualified through their performance in the 2019-20 Nations League, plus the invitation to Qatar making 13, with Trinidad &amp; Tobago, Haiti and Guadeloupe also qualifying for the tournament, while Guatemala replaced Curacao after the latter suffered a COVID-19 outbreak on the eve of the tournament.

2021 Gold Cup: How to watch, schedule, odds, predictions

The Women&#8217;s Olympic soccer tournament is stacked in Tokyo and it has already been one heck of a tournament.

The United States women&#8217;s national team have won the last two World Cups, but their 2016 Olympics was a rare failure as the team failed to medal for the first time in six tournaments.
After being <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-sweden-olympics-video-highlights-analysis-reaction" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">hammered in their opening group game by Sweden</a>, the <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-new-zealand-video-highlights-olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">USWNT hammered New Zealand to get back on track</a> and then <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/uswnt-australia-video-highlights-recap-reaction-analysis" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">drew with Australia</a> to finish second in Group G and limp into the knockout rounds.
Due to finishing second in their group, the USWNT will now face the Netherlands (the number four ranked team in the world who scored 21 goals in the group stage&#8230;) in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final.
Sweden won Group G with a perfect three wins out of three, Great Britain won Group E and remain unbeaten and racked up seven points, while the Netherlands won Group F and edged out Brazil on goal difference as they both finished with seven points.
Hosts Japan and an emerging Australia side clinched the final two spots in the quarterfinals as the best-placed third-place teams.
The goal of the tournament so far is from Dominique Janssen, who scored an incredible free kick for the Netherlands against Brazil, and you can see her stunning strike in the video below. What a hit.

Elsewhere, Great Britain and Sweden both qualified for the quarterfinals as the former beat hosts Japan 1-0 and the latter battled past Australia 4-2 as they each made it two wins from two games so far.
Brazil and the Netherlands put on a show in Miyagi with a wild 3-3 draw as Marta scored (her 12th Olympic goal) and Dominique Janssen scored an incredible free kick to keep the Netherlands top of their group, and you can see her stunning strike in the video below. What a hit.

Elsewhere, China and Zambia played out a crazy 4-4 draw as Wang Shuang scored all four goals for China, while Barba Banda has now scored back-to-back hat tricks to kick off the Olympics for Zambia.
They have conceded 14 goals but scored seven and they now face Brazil in their final group game. Expect plenty of goals in that one.
Remember: eight of the 12 teams competing in the women&#8217;s tournament reach the last eight, so the top two teams from the three groups make it through, then the two best-placed third-place teams also reach the quarterfinals.

Women’s Soccer at the Olympics: How to watch USWNT – Australia, schedule, start time, video

A stalemate between the USWNT and Australia, as the Americans finished second in Group G and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The 0-0 draw in Kashima was far from pretty, though.

Alex Morgan had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision in the first half and that was as good as it got for the U.S. as Australia&#8217;s Mary Fowler hit the crossbar with a header.
The USWNT has never finished with fewer than six points at an Olympic or World Cup group stage, but finished with four in this group as Sweden finished top of Group G with nine points from nine.
Vlatko Andonovski&#8217;s side now head to Yokohama for their quarterfinal clash, with a clash against either the Netherlands or Brazil likely.
That will be a huge step up for the USWNT, as they have yet to really get going in Japan.

<h4>3 things we learned</h4>
1. USWNT sloppy in possession, too cautious: Throughout the tournament the U.S. has been guilty of giving the ball away too easily. That happened again against Australia and they could hardly build any attacks, with their opponents having 61 percent of possession. Of course, they were happy enough to play for the draw in the end but they have limped into the quarterfinals and you get the sense that Andonovski&#8217;s squad rotation is impacting the rhythm of this team.
2. Kerr, Australia can make deep run: They are solid defensively and in Sam Kerr they have a genuine superstar, and the Matildas showed here they can reach the latter stages and cause problems in the knockout rounds. If they continue to be this well organized, they will frustrate the heck out of teams.
3. Davidson stands up: With a shutout, their first of the tournament, the standout defensive player was Tierna Davidson. The young center back was partnered alongside Becky Sauerbrunn and the duo looked very comfortable and should probably start together in the knockout rounds. Abby Dahlkemper has looked a little shaky in recent games and Davidson took her chance.
Player of the Match: Sam Kerr &#8211; Oozed class and did her best to hold the ball up and create for Australia.

The USWNT looked dangerous on the counter attack early on as Alex Morgan was set free but she slipped just as she got her shot away.
Australia improved and Mary Fowler hit the crossbar with a header and the USWNT struggled to get going.

At the other end Alex Morgan was denied an opener as she headed home a short corner, but it was ruled out for offside and VAR backed up the extremely tight call.

In the second half the USWNT sat back and Australia did all the pressing as Fowler flashed a shot wide and Tierna Davidson blocked a shot from Simon.
Lindsey Horan and Tobin Heath came on for Sam Mewis and Megan Rapinoe.
Horan headed a free kick wide in a rare chance for the USWNT, as Carli Lloyd and Lynn Williams were thrown on late in the game to try and get the offense firing.
It didn&#8217;t work as Australia played out the game with plenty of possession and the USWNT sat back and played for the draw and to conserve energy.

The USMNT and Canada picked up quarterfinal victories on Sunday to join Mexico and Qatar in the semifinals of the 2021 Gold Cup.

<h4>USA 1-0 Jamaica</h4>
The first half was wide open from end to end and wasn&#8217;t without high-quality scoring chances either. Matthew Hoppe forced Andre Blake to make a stellar reaction save with a hard-hit volley. Matt Turner went full-stretch to deny Junior Flemmings from outside the penalty area. Kellyn Acosta uncorked a volley from the edge of the area and just missed the target and what would have been a spectacular goal.

The second half lacked the same cohesion and possession that were on display in the first 45 minutes. Hoppe had another crack at Blake, but again the Jamaican goalkeeper was up to the challenge, and that was the best chance the USMNT managed to produce for 35 minutes.
As the game dragged on and appeared header for extra-time, the USMNT began a barrage of crosses into the box in hopes that someone might win a header in front of goal. With 83 minutes on the clock, Hoppe rose highest to meet Cristian Roldan&#8217;s floated cross and bag his first USMNT goal.

Up next for the USMNT is a semifinal clash with 2022 World Cup hosts and Gold Cup guest nation Qatar at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Tex., on Thursday (6:30 pm ET).

<h4>Costa Rica 0-2 Canada</h4>
Aside from reaching the Gold Cup semifinals for the first time since 2007, Canada appears to have a legitimate case for the title of &#8220;best of the rest in CONCACAF this cycle.&#8221; While the USMNT and Mexico — or, is it Mexico and the USMNT? — are expected to resume regular service atop the region, and Canada have their sights set on not only joining their North American neighbors in the 2022 World Cup, but leapfrogging the likes to Jamaica, Honduras and Costa Rica in the process.
Junior Hoilett got the scoring started in the 18th minute and Stephen Eustaquio bagged a second for Canada in the 68th.
