Bus terminals are critical transport infrastructure in FCT – Wike

Published on May 13, 2025 at 04:16 PM

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the ongoing construction of three major bus terminals in Abuja represents a vital step toward overhauling the city’s transport system.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday after inspecting two of the three terminals currently under construction, as well as the access road leading to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal in Dakibiyu.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the FCT Administration awarded contracts in 2024 for the development of bus and taxi terminals in Mabushi, Central Area, and Kugbo.

Speaking during his visit to the Mabushi and Kugbo sites, the minister praised the efforts of the contractors and emphasized the importance of the initiative.

“We are happy that we’re providing this kind of infrastructure. You will agree with me that the bus terminal is a basic intervention for us to change our transport system,”;; Wike said.

“We’re quite impressed with what we have seen. I commend the contractors for a job well done.
We will try as much as we can to make sure that the projects are delivered within the agreed timeline.”;;

Wike noted that once completed, the terminals would help organise the city’s chaotic public transport sector by encouraging the use of designated boarding points and enhancing safety.

“That, of course, will limit the incidence of ‘one chance’—criminals who pose as drivers to rob unsuspecting passengers,”;; he explained.
“So that’s the sense of building these terminals, and also to clean up the city so we don’t have buses all over the road, turning every roadside into a motor park.”;;

On the access road project in Dakibiyu, the minister expressed optimism that it would be among the key projects set for commissioning to mark President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.

He reassured residents that the Tinubu-led administration remains committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports a better quality of life for people in the FCT.
